Or: How I accidentally started a premium service construction company in my spare time

Matt Morgan

When I was ten years old, living in Ontario, we had a neighbour who owned a construction company.

He needed someone small enough to fit into tight crawlspaces; I needed pocket money. And so my career in construction began.

From the beginning I was drawn to high-end projects where skill, an attention to detail, and an understanding of the client’s wishes separated the boys from the men. So when I finally got the opportunity to work exclusively on high-end custom homes, I leaped in feet-first—even though it meant moving from Ontario to Whistler.

Five years later I became an independent businessman. I didn’t mean to. I didn’t set out to start a company. It just kinda happened…

You see, I was between projects when someone who’d noticed the quality of my work asked me to take on a small cabinet job. It went pretty well. One thing led to another, and before long I was doing large projects on the side.

I liked the taste of private work. It opened my eyes to the opportunities out there. I started comparing what I was doing with the other construction companies in Whistler. And I saw an opportunity to excel.

I knew I could do the work on my own. And I knew I could also do it better. So I decided to do just that. Once things started picking up, they never slowed down again.

In retrospect, I started TimberView way too young. I was bold and ambitious. Skilled, yes—but also inexperienced. Particularly at the business side of things.

But I learned. It was tough, and sometimes I was put into situations of pure desperation. I think that’s mainly what has made TimberView such a great company today. It forced me to learn and excel. I knew if I couldn’t keep up, I’d go out of business. And I was not going to go out of business—because honest-to-goodness I love my job. The stress and the yelling. The rain and the snow. The hot and the cold. I love it no matter what.

I did have some help. I look back on the “old days” and wonder how I accomplished so much in a just a few years. But I didn’t accomplish it all. I had some of the best people on my side that money can’t buy. (Even before I had employees—I have the most outstanding parents in the northern hemisphere!)

We’ve made it through the tough times—and they’ve made us what I truly believe is the best construction company in Whister. Possibly in British Columbia. I’m looking forward to proving that claim again in the future. Why not join us?
